The Wild Rose Jennifer Donnelly 9781401301040 Books Reviews

I had been waiting for this book awhile after I finished The Winter Rose in 4 days. And I wasn't disappointed. Ok so it is a little soap opera-y. But it doesn't bother me in these books. It only added to the angst which this author is so good at. I absoutely love these characters and their stories. I think some of the other reviewers were disappointed that these characters had flaws and demonstrated those flaws in the aftermath of war. It makes the book quite interesting because some of the plot lines aren't realistic at all while the flawed characters can be relatable. If you go into looking for a realistic book then this isn't it. But if you want to get sucked into a story and be entertained then this is your book. I couldn't put this thing down and nothing is better to me than a book that is a real page turner. Thank you Mrs. Donnelly. I am looking forward to what you write in hopefully the near future.
I am very happy with this series. I loved the second one so much that instead of doing a review, I chose to read this final installment of the series. I started this series with the book The Tea Rose which I very much liked. This has been a Great Series
I loved the Tea Rose and The Winter Rose and this third book in Donnelly's series was good--but not as great as the first two books. Since there was a time span from the first two books, I had to look back into The Winter Rose to remember some of the characters. Took a while after getting into the book to bring it all back! The first two books I couldn't put down--while this book had the intrigue, suspense , history knowledge and romance the other books had, it was not a page turner for me.
Confusing parts of who died then suddenly appeared, who appeared--then suddenly died--and how on earth did they survive certain situations? (of course--leaving the good guys alive and the bad ones gone!)
But Donnelly's writing and knowledge of history still makes me a huge fan, and I look forward to her future books.
Just that this didn't capture me as much as the first two books, but will still remain on my bookshelf as ones to pass on and have returned to me!
After reading the first two books in the trilogy, The Tea Rose and the Winter Rose I anxiously awaited the third and final installment. I knew this book would have a focus on Willa and Seamus and I wasn't sure what to expect. I had felt their sections in the Winter Rose a tad awkward and felt didn't mesh very well with the other story lines. I am a little partial to the stories of East London and it's inhabitants.

I was pleasantly surprised! The book stayed true to it's predecessors. It followed Willa and Seamie around the world but everyone we knew from the first two stories were still there, their stories intertwining in ways only Jennifer Donneley could craft. Due to external events the story lines blended seamlessly with out any awkwardness. I only wish Willa had been as strong of a female heroine as India and Fiona. Though I did notice a glimmer of their fire in a differnt aspiring young character.. *ahem, Ms. Donneley, spin off series .. please?!*

4 stars!

(for reference I would give the three books 4.5, 5, and then 4 respectively)
I adore the work of Jennifer Donnelly, and the Rose Trilogy is especially terrific. It seemed like such a long time between books #2 and #3 but the wait was worth it. Still, I'm not getting any younger, and I don't want to have to wait another couple of years before Donnelly gives us another spellbinding story. I know THE WILD ROSE was meant to end the Rose Trilogy, but I do so hope Donnelly will consider continuing the series for her many fans. I would love to see the stories of Katie, Charlotte, and Charlie told in a fourth book set against the years of WWII. I'm truly envious of the way Donnelly is able to torture her characters and keep us feverishly turning pages into the night. All the while I was reading each of the Rose novels, I knew the story would end happily -- or at least in a very satisfying way -- but that didn't keep me from worrying about the characters, because Donnelly has that rare ability to plunge them into seemingly impossible situations, then finding the one way to get them out that her readers will believe. Bravo, Ms. Donnelly. You are a marvelous writer, and I'm envious. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I almost did not read this book. THE TEA ROSE ranks as my favorite novel of all time, and although I liked THE WINTER ROSE, I dreaded a novel featuring the horrible, self-centered and mean-spirited Willa as the heroine. When I saw this book at the library, I decided to give it a shot (free, what can I say....) but within one chapter I put it down, raced to , and bought a kindle version. Jennifer Donnelly did what I thought was impossible.....she made me really like and cheer for Willa Alden!

I am so glad I decided to go ahead and complete the trilogy. It comes to a very satisfying conclusion, and Seamus was a great hero. I learned to like Willa, even though she is a real change of pace from the typical heroine of a historical novel. I loved revisiting Joe and Fiona, as they play pretty important roles in the book.

I wish I could find other writers who have the same vibe as J. Donnelly. Elizabeth Camden's The Rose of Winslow Street is similar (if you don't mind the spiritual angle) and Ciji Ware is close. Anyone have any Donnelly-like recommendations? She doesn't write them fast enough for me!
This book will make you weep, it is so beautiful. Jennifer Donnelly has created another soul grabbing masterpiece. Prepare for a roller-coaster of emotions, as Jennifer takes you through such a vivid story of love, heartbreak and mystery.
