This story had a lot of voice which helped create a really strong MC. Elise, the MC, also shows a little character development, which was interesting to see unfold a little.

Elise was transparent from the beginning: she had personality and lots of it. It worked well, and stayed consistent in this story. I haven't read much of modern day books with witches, and this didn't totally disappoint in that regard. There is strong language, and some sex (although not much), so if that's a turn off for you, you may not click with Elise's personality.

As far as the paranormal aspect, it involves werewolves, vampires and witches. I'm interested in witchcraft, but not vamps or werewolves. Fortunately, Young doesn't go into a lot of detail regarding the vamps and werewolves, which made it bearable for me. They were there, but they weren't sucking blood like crazy, so I didn't mind them.

Overall, it was an easy read with a strong magic system. If she had anything going for her, Young seemed to really know how the magic worked, and she kept that consistent. It was interesting to read about the spells they'd cast, the way they used their magic, etc. I liked this aspect, and it made me want to keep reading to see how Young would introduce different things.

My biggest issues come from the characters and their relationships. It felt like it went from love triangle, to square, and back to a different triangle. By the end, I still didn't have a good understand of what her relationship with Van was. I clearly understood that they weren't committed, but why was he so annoyingly possessive and protective then? Mona, a sweet little girl, was good in herself, but I didn't really understand her purpose. She's very powerful for a ten-year-old, but by the end, she just seemed to fizzle out. With that kind of build up, I thought her power would mean something for the story, and it didn't. Elise speaks about how much she cares about Mona, and how unexpected her feelings towards Mona were. She says it a lot. Almost too much. At the end of the book, I wasn't sure I really connected with any character. Elise is supposed to be the Head Mistress, but she comes off like a 16-year-old through most of the book. That got really annoying, but at least Young kept her consistent. I'm still not even sure her actual age. She wants to reintroduce 'fun' into the school system, and just ends up acting immature most of the time. It wasn't believable for someone who should be taking responsibility for other people.

Because there was a lot of backstory and history, it led to a lot of telling. I started to skim in some parts. Elise tells the history of her people at the beginning, but since I didn't know them as a reader, I wasn't too invested in learning about it.

There were several misspellings, repetition in words, and some grammar mistakes, but I've seen much worse before. It wasn't too distracting, and they were mostly spaced far apart.

The ending definitely threw me for a loop, but I felt no real sense of closure in it. It stirred up too many questions and introduced something out of the blue that made me feel like I'd missed something and had to go back and check.

Coven The Elise Michaels Series Book 1 eBook Kate Young Kristin Campbell Reviews

Elise MIchaels becomes someone you find yourself falling into... The character development here is really excellent. The author really needs to get a good editor because there are a few unforgivable word misuse errors, but you'll forgive them as you read on past them.. The book is so well written you won't be sorry you picked up the series and you won't be able to stop until you read them all. I rarely give any book a rave review but this one comes really close.
I got this book when K.A. Young had them free thru & Barnes&Noble. I haven't been disappointed yet by any of her books. I love her worlds! I love how Coven takes you futher into her warrior series... Ok so Elise Michaels left her coven years ago, left her friends, family and Garrett who was cast to be her mate. Now her Aunt/Head Mistress has been killed and Elise is now in charge of the coven and is now Head Mistress and has to go back to protect the coven. She goes back with Van her warrior her boyfriend with no strings. Elise gets in allot of heated situations with Garrett & Van. This story had me hooked from page one till the end. If you love vampires, werewolves, magic and romance with humor and suspense check this book out you will love it!
If you enjoy paranormals of any flavor, this is definitely a good book for you to pick up. From sorcerers to vampires to werewolves to witches to... well, you get the idea. There's something for everyone.

Elise just wants to live her life and be wild and free. Yet she must return to the Coven and take over as Head Mistress. With that return, her simple, easy life is a thing of the past, and the obligations she ran from are back. Her biggest fear is the betrothal spell cast upon her and Garrett when they were infants. She's bound to him, but all she wants is to know their love is true. She doesn't want their relationship to be based on a spell, but actual romance, and I liked her so much more for that. After all, who doesn't want to be special to someone, merely for being who they are?

There was a lot packed into one book, and I enjoyed all of it. I haven't read anything from this author before, but that didn't detract, as previous characters were introduced but also explained well.

My only issues were the spelling and grammar errors. They pulled me from the story so I had to guess what exactly should have gone in place there instead. With some more editing, I'd give this book 5 stars easily.

This review is from Coven (The Elise Michaels Series, #1 ) ( Edition)
The story is good. After the headmistress of the Coven (school for sorcerers - male and female) has been murdered. Elise is called back to become headmistress. The people who murdered the headmistress and her daughter are now targeting Elise and the Coven.

Three exceptinally beautiful young men are competing for her favors. The language is very rude.

The story also contains small jewels of insight. E.g. when you perform a spell you place yourself in the hands of magic because you never know excactly how it will turn out. Just to quote one. Also interesting is the spell used by the parents to make two powerful children fall in love with each other. What is the effect when someone meddles with your emotions? How do you know if you would like that person without the spell?

The story ends in "mid air". They are still trying to find their opponenents. There has not yet been a confrontation of the two groups.
