The Ascendant A Garrett Reilly Thriller Drew Chapman Books

The plot is something that Clancy might have thought up. It is both excellent & off-the-wall. The writing is good, but doesn't have the depth yet of an early Clancy novel. I'm hoping it gets better. Characters are sketched rather than painted. You have enough information to understand most of the characters' motivations, but not enough to feel like you KNOW them. Lest you think these are major flaws, don't. Give the author time. This is after all a first novel. This book was enjoyable enough that I've preordered the next book by the author. The plot was very, very good. And the pace never flagged. Get the book, read it. You will enjoy it.

The Ascendant A Garrett Reilly Thriller Drew Chapman Books Reviews

Interesting main genius character who sees patterns that no one else sees. Quite compelling! Internet chaos both fake and real almost causes a war.
Highly intelligent thriller. It combines the worlds of finance, cyber warfare and gaming, while recognizing that China represents America's most significant potential adversary. Well drawn main characters, gifted dialogue, ingenious plot. Read it. It's a winner. Drew Chapman is a major new talent.
Had just finished "pilgrim" when I got pushed into this Chapman book with the Reilly character. Well written tech thriller. Reilly is smart, ballsy, loves good looking women and likes to fight. What else do we need. The book read so well I was disappointed to reach the end. Now I will have to do something productive like take a shower.
4.5 STARS.

Solidly written, well-paced, plausible. This would be a five-star book if not for a couple of technology-related oversights that detracted, just a bit, from plausibility. I really enjoyed this book. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. As good as any international intrigue novel I've read in the past few years. Read it.
Is this how war will be fought between superpowers? China begins a series of hacking and financial crimes against the US, all designed to provoke the US into attacking China. Why? To divert the attention of the Chinese people from a burgeoning dissent movement. Our protagonist, Garrett Reilly, is the first to detect the patterns. The government brings him in to counter the Chinese, but who is really on Garrett's side? This is an imaginative plot, and the story never lets up. Highly recommended.
Having read most of the books written since the 70s in this genre, I can enthusiastically report that the author, like his protagonist, thinks outside the margins, does not resort to formulaics, and has created an interesting group of characters. I sincerely hope I will meet them again in the not distant future. The plot is painstakingly constructed and creates a world crisis that is all to plausible. I have a couple of minor criticisms. The main characters could have been developed better. This is not to say they were developed poorly, but there were gaping holes in their stories. Second, the plot was not tied up as neatly as one might wish; in that the most likely ramifications and consequences in the US government were neither explained or even addressed. With that being said, this is an excellent first work. I now read the daily news with a more cynical eye.
As a long time techie and a current day trader I really liked this novel. I literally could not put the book down. The author has a lot of good friends that helped him with stock trading details and more important schooled him on Internet security and technical terms. These friends received acknowledgement from the author at the end of the book.

Naturally a lot of the Ascendant team's skills and accomplishments are of super hero proportions. But the bottom line the novel has an extremely fast pace that kept my attention.
