This is really more a coffee table (tea table?) book than a useful history. While the text attempts to group ideas by time, ultimately it's a collection of one-to-two page vignettes touching on different aspects of tea. The images included are good, and there are some fun bits to read in here but as a whole it doesn't quite gel. Still, if you love tea, it's a good enough book to have.

A Social History of Tea Jane Pettigrew 9780707802893 Books Reviews

Look for the new 2013 paperback expanded edition which includes tea's influence on American history along with the British stories found in this original 2001 edition.
A must read for tea people,
Well written, and very informative. Contains a lot of interesting and fun facts about the social history of tea.
As an American reading this book written by a British author, the recounting of "The Boston Tea Party" during the Revolutionary War, the recounting is way off base.
I was absolutely thrilled with this book. I had been asked to give a lecture for our Tea Tasting group. I researched some topics and decided to do the History of Tea in Britain. What an wonderful resource book this turned out to be. Jane Pettigrew has done extensive research. It brings out all the history you learned in high school as well but now are more inclined to enjoy. The pictures and notes are great. There is so much information that I had to condense what I would say. But I thoroughly enjoyed reading everything.
Jane Pettigrew has written from the eyes of the people who brought tea to the West, as well as those who popularized it with their devotion. It's well-researched, full of advertisements, bills, receipts, quotes, and other evidence of the wonderful history of the blessed drink.

Of particular interest to me was the time in history when tea was the preferred drink of the temperance movement. Tea replaced alcoholic beverages as the regular drink for those British people who couldn't drink the ubiquitous dirty water.

The only disappointment about this book was there was no social history of tea in China, Korea, and Japan. That's too wide a scope for a single volume, perhaps. But it's a must-have for anyone who wants to see what tea consumers throughout Western history have seen of the drink.
